3. Choosing Long Tail Keywords

Now scan trough the list and pick long tail keywords (Keywords with at least 3 words) which have at least 1000 searches per month, in this example I choose “angry birds stuffed animals

Long Tail Keywords

Now copy paste the keyword in the search box with all the same setting and check the box that says Only show ideas closely related to my search terms just below the Search box and click search.

Now we will see only keywords with the keyword in them, since these are long tail keywords you won’t find many keywords, but the ones you find will be closely related to your keyword phrase and will be good options to make additional pages for your sites

4. Checking for keyword competition and commercial intent

Now we need to check if this keyword has low competition in google and has a good commercial intent. So what we will do is click the keyword and the keyword will open in a new window.

Now to check the competing sites put the keyword in inverted commas, like this “angry birds stuffed animals

If the number of competing sites is less than 100,000 then the key word is good. In our example the keyword has 88000 competing sites which is good.

You can also see there are tons of advertisers paying for advertisements on this page so the keyword looks profitable as well.

Google Competetion

I have just mentioned 100000 competing sites as a my bench mark in this example the keyword ‘angry birds stuffed animals’ has a competition of 88000, but in case the competition was say 150000 according to the benchmark i would have to discard the keyword but before doing that I would check the page rank, back links and on-page optimization factors of the sites on page one of google ranking for that keyword.

If the 3 criteria’s I am looking for are weak and the sites do not meet them, I know I can beat them and rank on page one in 10 – 15 days and I will consider the keyword even with a competition of 150000.

So even if you use competition as a benchmark don’t discard keywords only based on that. Be careful and check the websites ranking for that keyword before you take a call.

For this example keyword with 3600 searches per month with 88000 competing sites and a good commercial intent, and we should be able to rank this site in 10 days or so.

5. Misconceptions about the Google external keyword tool.

The google external keyword tool shows a column with the competition for each keyword. The competition information does not tell us if the keyword is difficult or easy to rank on google. The competition data is for google paid advertisers only. So please do not dismiss keywords because you see the competition is high.

Secondly make sure that you correctly choose the country in you settings if you are targeting a local market then only look at the search count in that column. If you just looking at the global numbers you can choose all the countries.

Lastly the Cost Per Click Mentioned in the tool is not an indication of what you will get paid in case you have an adsense site that amounts is an indication as to how much the advertiser will have to pay google to rank for that particular keyword.

Google Misconception

So make sure you don’t chop of keywords from your list if you see the competition is to high  in the google keyword tool you need to check in google to see if the competition is low and then make a decision.
